DESCRIPTION AND FEATURES

Product Introduction

The INMP441 is a high-performance, low-power, digital-output, omnidirectional MEMS microphone with a bottom port. This complete INMP441 solution consists of a MEMS sensor, signal conditioning, analog-to-digital converter, anti-aliasing filter, power management, and an industry-standard 24-bit I²S interface.

The I²S interface allows the INMP441 to connect directly to digital processors (such as DSPs and microcontrollers), eliminating the need for an audio codec in the system.

With high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the INMP441 is an excellent choice for near-field applications. It also features a flat wideband frequency response, resulting in natural, high-clarity sound.

FAQ

What's the difference between omnidirectional microphones and unidirectional microphones?

First, note that sound spreads in all directions: when someone speaks, their voice disperses outward through the air, and how far it travels depends on multiple factors.
  1. Unidirectional microphones

Their sound pickup radius is usually very small (30 cm is considered large). They’re designed for single-person use—positioned close to the mouth, they deliver good sound quality because they don’t pick up sounds from farther away. They typically have a gooseneck design (a curved arm that extends to the user’s mouth), focusing only on the user’s voice. Their sensitivity is limited: too high sensitivity would cause sharp feedback (like screeching), which involves compatibility with other devices. There are reasons why manufacturers don’t increase their pickup radius (more on that later).
  2. Omnidirectional microphones

Their sound pickup radius is much larger (ranging from 1 to 5 meters), a huge difference compared to the 10+ cm range of unidirectional mics. They pick up sound from multiple people (5, 8, or even 10+ people) instead of just one. While their sensitivity is high, the large pickup radius also captures more background noise—so their sound quality is usually worse than unidirectional mics (unless good noise reduction is applied).

There’s a clear distinction between devices for group use vs. single-person use. However, omnidirectional mics have a benefit: simpler wiring (no need to set up one per person). They’re ideal for small meetings, ad-hoc meetings, remote discussions, or remote operations.
  3. Key note on functionality

Unidirectional microphones usually support local sound amplification.

Omnidirectional microphones generally do not support local amplification—their high sensitivity would cause severe feedback (screeching) during local playback, which is technically hard to eliminate right now.
