Product Introduction of PCF8563 RTC board
The PCF8563 is a CMOS Real-Time Clock (RTC) and calendar optimized for low power consumption. A programmable clock output, interrupt output, and voltage-low detector are also provided. All addresses and data are transferred serially via a two-line bidirectional I2C-bus. Maximum bus speed is 400 kbit/s. The register address is incremented automatically after each written or read data byte.

1. Power Supply (VCC): The module receives external power (e.g., 5V or 3.3V from an Arduino) through the VCC pin. This power source supplies the PCF8563’s VDD pin and all peripheral circuits on the module.
2. Backup Battery: The module includes a CR1220 coin cell holder. The battery’s positive terminal connects to the PCF8563’s Vbat pin, and its negative terminal is grounded. When the main power (VCC) is disconnected, the backup battery maintains the RTC’s operation to retain timekeeping data.
3. I2C Communication Interface: The PCF8563’s SCL (pin 2) and SDA (pin 5) lines are internally pulled up to VCC via 1kΩ resistors (no external pull-ups are needed, avoiding bus resistance conflicts). These lines are exposed as the module’s SCL and SDA pins, which connect to an Arduino’s A5 (SCL) and A4 (SDA) pins (or equivalent I²C pins on other controllers).
4. Clock Oscillator Circuit: The PCF8563 uses a 32.768kHz crystal oscillator as its timekeeping reference. Matching capacitors (e.g., 12pF) are connected in series between each side of the crystal and ground. These capacitors ensure stable oscillation (capacitance values directly impact timing accuracy).
5. Optional Pins: INT (Interrupt Output, PCF8563 pin 3): Configurable to generate interrupt signals for events like alarms or timers. The module may expose this pin for external use.
6. Brownout Detection Mechanism: The PCF8563 integrates an internal low-voltage detection circuit. When the VDD supply voltage falls below a predefined threshold, the VL bit (the 7th bit of the seconds register) is set to logic ‘1’ This bit flags potential timekeeping inaccuracies. To clear the VL bit, software intervention is required.
